The
goals of the Mural Mission are to democratize the arts providing art programs
to the underserved multi-ethnic inner-city communities outside of normal school
hours in a variety of community and global settings. The project strives to
expose the youth to highly trained and recognized arts professionals through
residencies and artist exchanges encouraging the youth to learn as active participants
through a multidisciplinary arts process. The mural process acts as a tool and
foundation for arts learning while mobilizing the youth to take an active role
in their communities locally and abroad. Though an interdisciplinary approach
involving community art making and technology, the youth can utilize areas of
communication, language, writing, history and research creating a rich learning
experience. Through the power of public art, bridging the gap between arts and
culture, the Mission Mural seeks to act as a cultural arts resource for youth
development involving the youth as participants in the civic process thus creating
a more understanding and tolerant society.
